Gunn City, Missouri is a small village that lies on the eastern boundary of CassCounty. It is situated in farmland and only has around 30 households. This place is famous for an event that occurred in 1872 known as the “Gunn City Massacre.” To the west of Gunn, City is the county seat of Harrisonville.

Gunn City is only a small village so you will want to look at the surrounding Cass County region in order to find things to do and see.

In Harrisonville, you can visit the Burnt District Museum which preserves the history of the settlers and the Civil War in this area of the state. The term “Burnt District” refers to an event in 1863 when the residents of Cass and other neighboring counties were routed out of their homes by Union soldiers who then burned all of the buildings to the ground. This action was taken in attempt to find guerillas fighting for the Confederacy but it is a dark tragedy in the war because it was the first time something of this nature was directed towards civilians.

In fact, you can find many historical organizations and sites in Cass County and Harrisonville. Notable among these are the Cass County Historical Society, theBurntDistrictMonument, the Harrisonville World War I Memorial, and the United We Stand Divided We Fall Memorial. The latter was established to recognize the Cass County judges who were imprisoned rather than implement a levy to pay for fraudulent railroad and township bonds.
